It is a documented fact that millions of women remain in abusive relationships because they are afraid of what will happen to their pets if they leave them behind. Studies show that up to 71% of battered women report that their pet was threatened, harmed or killed by their abuser. The emotional attachment they feel for their pets is a vulnerability that batterers exploit and control.

And sadly, many domestic violence shelters do not have the room or resources to allow animals. It is a choice many battered women are unable to make: their safely, or the safety of their pet.

That’s why Friends of Animals is partnering with the Peace House, a local women’s shelter, which helps women and children in domestic abuse situations.

FOA will provide long-term foster care or find a new, loving home for the animals of these women, so they can get the help they need and not have to worry about the pet they left behind.
